The principal goal of this concert is to introduce the audience to diverse musical soundscapes that coexist on the culturally rich South Asia’s “hybrid island” Sri Lanka. The repertoire features educational folk songs with no instrumental accompaniment, examples of Indian influences in a range from classical music to film songs, Afro- Portuguese originated genre baila, songs on the religious aspects of life in Sri Lanka, tunes associated with contemporary popular culture, and songs linked to political activism, with which Sri Lankans reacted to the long-lasting civil war that ended up in 2009. Lasanthi, singer and ethnomusicologist from Sri Lanka, sings in three languages: Sinhalese, Tamil, and English. The instrumentalists – Tina, Anita, Ravi and Vasja – are accomplished Slovene musicians who share sincere appreciation and love for Sri Lankan musics. They will be joined on stage by special guests – the ensemble Pella.
